Holidays bring up emotions of all kinds. Stories help: they keep your emotions flowing in a healthy way. Today I’ve got two very different book recommendations—one of them might be just right for you!

the-reluctant-assasinIf you’re flying high this time of year, here’s a perfect young adult science fiction adventure story: The Reluctant Assassin (W.A.R.P. Book 1), by Eoin Colfer. Full of action, imagination, peril and courage, it’s set both in modern day and Victorian London. Best of all, it has a—pardon the expression—“kick-ass” heroine along with a boy hero. Here’s the summary:

“In Victorian London, Albert Garrick, an assassin for hire, and his reluctant teenaged apprentice, Riley, are transported via wormhole to modern London, where Riley teams with a young FBI agent to stop Garrick from returning to his own time with the scientific knowledge and power to change the world forever.”

What that summary doesn’t make properly clear, is that the FBI agent is a sixteen-year-old Native American girl named Chevron Savano. Of course her gender and heritage make no difference to the story itself, but for me they add appeal. The Reluctant Assassin is a gritty and gripping story—a great holiday adrenaline read.

be-light-like-a-birdIf holidays bring on the blues, or you have lost someone during this past year, Be Light Like a Bird, by Monika Schroder is just the thing for you. The summary:

“When her father is killed in an accident, twelve-year-old Wren is grief stricken, but what upsets her even more is that her mother seems to be filled with anger rather than sadness. As they move from place to place, Wren is forced to cope with her mother’s strange behavior, her own grief, and all the problems that come with being the new girl in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where they finally end up.”

Besides the main cathartic plot line about healing loss and family pain, other themes are friendship, bird watching, and promoting recycling over landfills. Be Light Like a Bird will speak to broken hearts (or those with cracks in them!), and carry them on a healing, empowering and heart-warming journey.

Piper and the girls and I all wish you Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!
