Excellent Read-Aloud Book
Here’s a find for those of you who love to read aloud: Wicked Nix, by Lena Coakley, illustrated by Jaime Zollars.
Wicked Nix—
—is a quick little read, but a surprising and delightful one—a unique fairy tale. The tale reveals what the title means. It’s one of the unexpected twists.
Back of the Book Blurb:
“Wicked Nix is like any other fairy food—it is delightful; it will cut you to the core. With humor and heartbreak, devastating loss and the hope of connection, Wicked Nix is a meditation on the lies we tell ourselves to protect ourselves and the unexpected ways we might build a family. A sharp, startling, wondrous story.”
Designed with big print, wide margins and plenty of illustrations, this makes for a relaxing, non-threatening read for less confident readers. As a devoted and confident reader, I found it relaxing as well. The visual elements invited me to wade deeper into the story.
Fairy Tale Feast
Add this book to several I’ve recommended recently that hold fairy tales as their inspiration. I love experiencing how authors take what has affected them deeply, and use it to create their very own story.
It’s a reminder to me that there is nothing truly new under the sun. If you are waiting for an “original thought” to begin writing your own story, leave that idea and just start writing!
I believe readers love familiarity as much as freshness in the stories they read. That’s certainly true for me. And the whimsical illustrations are delightful!
Wicked Nix by Lena Coakley has the deep resonance that all good fairy tales hold. Grab it today at your library! Those you read aloud to will love it.
Can’t wait to read this one. We are “read aloud” folks and appreciate suggestions.
Did I read ” just grab your pen and write your own”?
Thanks.
I’m ready to read it when you write it!!! 🙂
