Every wonderful story has a magic moment.
Maybe more than one magic moment…
Today, rather than passing on a book recommendation, let me share the magic moment from Peter Pan that has burned brightly for me all these years.
Here’s the scene—I’m sure you’ll remember it:
Peter Pan wakes from his nap at the Hollow Tree. The Lost Boys have left with Wendy, John and Michael to return to London.
Peter reaches for his medicine—Wendy asked him, before she left, to remember to take it. In a flash, Tinker Bell flies in and drinks it before Peter can. She knows what Peter does not: Captain Hook poisoned it.
Tinker Bell is dying.
Peter Pan, in his distress, calls out to children everywhere to help Tinker Bell: “If you believe in fairies, clap your hands!”
Of course the audience claps wildly, and Tinker Bell’s light, now terribly dim, grows brighter and brighter until she comes fully back to life.
What makes this such a precious magic moment for me?
- Remembering when we ask for help, it comes rushing in from sources far beyond what we expect.
- Knowing how even adults want to believe in fairies with every fiber of their being
- Witnessing the truth that believing in others is a magic elixir with the power to brighten a dim light, even save a life.
Today Piper Pan and her Merry Band, King Oberon, Queen Titania, even Sincoraz—and I, of course—send you this magic elixir:
