Girl Hero

You know I love a girl hero!

My Piper Pan and Her Merry Band books have not only one girl hero, but eight of them.

Today’s recommended book: Ranger’s Apprentice: The Royal Ranger, The Red Fox Clan by John Flanagan, has a terrific girl hero.

The Royal Ranger coverI’ve read only a couple of books from John Flanagan’s bestselling Ranger’s Apprentice series. Set in a mythical world where castles still play central roles in power, there’s a lot of old England flavor, with some Vikings to boot. The rangers are… a woods-savvy version of a warrior intelligence officer. Oh, and they bond with their horses such that they talk to each other. (I like that part a lot!)

Obviously, with fantasy and a bit of magic thrown in, this is up my alley. But I’ve not read enough of these books—they are full of battles—nor have I read them in order.

In fact, today’s book is the second in a new series: Ranger’s Apprentice: The Royal Ranger. Book two is The Red Fox Clan. (Book one I haven’t read yet: A New Beginning). This new series stars the first female ranger (and none too soon!)

Summary:

The mysterious Red Fox Clan, a group of anarchists all donning fox masks, have threatened Castle Araluen and question Princess Cassandra and Madelyn’s succession to the throne. Will they succeed in taking the throne for themselves?

Madelyn, or “Maddie” is our ranger apprentice hero. Being also a princess, she leads a double life, needing to keep her training secret for political and safety reasons. We get to come along with her as she singlehandedly finds the secret castle passageways, and works to outwit the villains.

Just my kind of book: starring a kick-butt girl hero!

You don’t have to read the first Ranger’s Apprentice series to enjoy this new one, but I would recommend starting with Maddie’s book one: A New Beginning.

Happy Reading!

    Hi Lindy,
Not book related….but I wanted to let you know that your mother’s presentation this morning at the Senior Center re her ‘around Lake Michigan’ 800 mile bike ride was inspiring (as well as entertaining!) She’s one special lady!
