I love books that provide me a window into another world. Maybe you read The Lightning Queen, by Laura Resau after I recommended it recently—it brought Rom and Mixtec Indian cultures vividly to life.
Today’s book recommendation: Dolls of Hope, by Shirley Parenteau, is another such window into another world. It’s […]
I have an awesome read for you!
One thing I can say without doubt: writing, then reading other people’s writing, leads one to REALLY appreciate good writing. Whether one can take the excellence one sees and apply it to one’s own writing, is another question!
I’m late to the party on this book—this series, I […]
Here’s yet another way authors can grab and hold a reader’s attention throughout a book: passion and peril. By “passion,” in this case I mean gripping excitement and intensity. Peril, of course, is the intense danger just about to happen that keeps you from turning out the light while reading at bedtime!
Today’s book recommendation […]
“Summer and Bird” : exquisite cover and book!
The book I’m featuring today is Summer and Bird, by Katherine Catmull, published in 2012. I picked it up because of its cover.
What? Yes! Who made that saying up, anyway? “Don’t judge a book by its […]
Do you love Westerns?
The Curse of the Neverland is definitely not a western. I usually call it “middle grade fantasy adventure” when I’m asked to classify by genre. But today’s book recommendation, one I would call a western, has some strong common bonds with Piper Pan and Her Merry Band.

I have another jewel of a book to share with you. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, by Jacqueline Kelly. It turns out to also be a Newbery Honor Winner.
Set in 1899 in a small town not too many days journey from Austin, Texas, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate […]
One of the tools to attract readers is to be able to tell them “If you enjoyed x, y, & z (book titles), you’ll enjoy my book.” In librarian language, this is called a “title read-alike.” So I asked my children’s librarian friend, Pam, what titles she would equate with “The Curse of the Neverland.” […]
This is an exciting week, full of author fun for me. Hope you can join me at one or more of these:
All Week: May 4-9, downtown Sequim

Stay tuned for a coming event—I’m cooking something up with Hart’s Fine Books in Sequim for National Children’ Book Week, May 4 – 8!
A friend sent me a YouTube talk on the Hero’s Journey. (Find the link at the end of this article). She thought I might map out the hero’s journey […]
You know my book The Curse of the Neverland champions smart and gutsy girls in a fantasy adventure quest involving pirates, fairies, and a dragon. It’s a great book for kids age 8-14 (boys like it, too!). It’s also a terrific cross-generational book, happily shared between hip grandmothers and their grandchildren, cool aunts and their […]
